2. Here's To Your Best Year in 2009
Every January, millions of people make some pretty big New Year's resolutions. This is the year they'll stop smoking or drinking; the year they will give more to charity, the year they'll finally write that book or make that long-needed career change. The lists are endless.
But by far, the most popular New Year's resolution is the one in which we resolve to get into shape. We'll exercise every day, we'll join a gym and actually use it, and we'll burn calories until we get our bodies back to where they were when we were 18. Every year, we start with the very best of intentions, and by February, we're right back to our old unhealthy habits.
Not this year. In 2009, I'm going to help you make your resolution stick, so that by March, you're on your way to your healthiest body ever. It all starts with a few small adjustments to the way you set out to make your changes.
Summer time is often a great time to make positive changes so let's start now.
- Make your resolution realistic:
No one is going to go from couch potato to an Olympian in one fell swoop. If you aren't a regular exerciser now, you aren't immediately going to work out six days a week, and by vowing to do so you set yourself up for serious disappointment and ultimately, failure. Small steps set you on a path to long-term lifestyle changes; begin by making the commitment to exercise for 20 minutes a day, three days a week. Once that's become a part of your routine, build on it a little every few weeks.
- Eat a healthy nutrient rich variety of foods:
A healthy, nutrient-rich diet is a good idea for everyone. Now, it appears to be a key strategy for weight management instead of the overly simple focus on cutting calories. So in addition to looking at calories, help make every calorie count towards a nutrient-rich diet. Encourage more fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, oily fish, whole grain cereals and other healthy food choices.
- Eat Protein:
The findings from Current Opinions in Clinical Nutrition & Metabolic Care, Vol 12 No 1, 2009 January paper states, "A protein-enriched diet induces satiety, improves body composition and results in weight loss." Put simply, protein-rich foods including lean meats, chicken and fish, dairy, eggs, legumes, soy and some grains can help you feel fuller, sooner at a meal and feel fuller for longer after a meal. Protein enriched snacks are also advantageous for the same reasons.
- Set small goals and then reward yourself each time you achieve one:
Every kilo lost earns you a special treat. Just be careful of rewarding yourself with junk food, or you'll be undoing all your hard work. There are many rewards that you could choose besides food.
- Figure out what's behind your unhealthy habits:
Do you turn to junk food for comfort, habit or boredom? Why? Maybe help in some shape or form is in order, or maybe just a good long soul search, but identifying the issues that hold you back will help you move forward.
- Get a support system!
Tell people about your goals and ask them to hold you accountable. Join a weight loss/fitness blog e.g. www.weightloss.com.au or maybe start a facebook group and find others who will support you on your journey.
- Believe in yourself.
You can do it.
- Join a fitness program or hire a trainer:
Boot camps, fitness makeovers and hiring a top notch personal trainer provides the motivation, accountability and gives you all the tools you need for success.
- Make a list and check it twice:
Write down the little things you need to do to accomplish your goals - squeeze in enough servings of fruits and veggies, walk for 20 minutes etc. Check them off as you complete them. At the end of the day all those little checkmarks will give you a great sense of accomplishment.
This is the year you're really going to do it. Happy New Year - and happier you with healthier habits!
3. Oprah's Challenge
Anyone that reads a glossy magazine knows all about Oprah's weight loss battles and in particular her current weight loss challenge. Oprah is a typical yo-yo dieter although in recent years she has managed to keep her weight quite stable until recently. She made a very public announcement that she was upset with how she had let herself gain back so much weight and has now vowed to get back on track. Oprah is doing this with the help of a team of people. Her challenge to get back on the wagon as she calls it can be seen on http://www.thebestlife.com/BLWEEK/
However one of the very first things Oprah decided was to make herself a priority this year and put herself back on her to-do-list literally! Are you on your 'to-do-list' or is this something you may also need to reassess in 2009?
Be safe and have fun.
Warm wishes
Sharon
